Virtual Reality Oil Rig Training

An immersive training program where oil rig workers can practice different safety protocols and machine operations in VR. This project was created for an anonymous client in the oil industry.

Users interact with realistic oil rig tools and machinery in a specially crafted VR environment.

In this blended learning program, we utilized VR to improve the training process for oil rig workers. We created a series of self-paced eLearning activities for learners to complete at home, then designed a series of interactive VR scenarios for on-site training. By recreating an oil rig in virtual reality, we enabled employees to practice working with specific tools that are normally only available on a physical oil rig.

As the lead instructional designer on the project, I was responsible for:

  • Partnering with SMEs in the oil industry to gather requirements and specifications

  • Translating technical manuals, diagrams, and tool designs into appropriate reference material for artists and developers

  • Designing and testing how users interact with oil rig components in VR

  • Developing branching training scenarios that aligned with the oil company’s workflows and safety protocols

  • Creating flowcharts, storyboards, and design documentation to present training content to stakeholders

All components in the project were modeled 1:1 based on specific reference material provided to us by the clients.

The final product contained three different oil rig environments where learners could practice their skills. While learners worked in VR, instructors could influence different aspects of the environment to test how the learners would respond to safety checks, weather conditions, and different types of emergencies.
